WildZone delivers 10-week programmes that combine the best practices and principles of outdoor education and youth work.

Continuity and Progression

Ten selected pupils participate in each programme, led by a qualified outdoor instructor from Adventure Unlimited, a youth worker or teacher, and a senior helper or trainee. They form a 'closed' group: pupils and staff alike commit to the entire 10-week programme, ensuring continuity, progression and the development of mutual trust.

Meeting once each week, the group takes part in outdoor pursuits, team challenges, discussions and self-review.

The Programme

Each programme is tailored to suit the group but the basic 'template' is 8 evening sessions, 2 activity days, a weekend camp and a reunion day two months later. In addition, each participant has four one-to-one mentoring sessions: at the start, during, end and two months after the programme.

Celebrating Achievement

Each programme includes a presentation made by participants to their parents, teachers and community leaders using video, photographs and diaries.

Why We Do It This Way

The outdoor activities present exciting opportunities to overcome challenges. Elements such as group meals and the weekend camp help to build positive relationships amongst the young people and staff, based on mutual trust and respect.

Mentoring gives participants the chance to discuss their hopes, concerns, progress, personal goals and next steps. Vitally, mentoring also ensures that any learning from the programme is transferred back into pupils' lives in school and the community.
