HELPING NEW LEADERS TO BECOME OUTSTANDING LEADERS TANYA BOCKING 15TH SEPTEMBER 1962 - 10TH DECEMBER 2003 Tanya joined Brighton-based outdoor education charity, Adventure Unlimited, as a trainee in 1997 when she was recovering from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and worked enthusiastically through each level of the organisation, eventually becoming Operations Manager in 2001. She believed that outdoor activities help people to achieve more than they thought possible in all fields by building their physical and mental confidence. She greatly enjoyed helping people overcome disadvantage and, through their involvement with the charity, get up the courage to achieve their ambitions. Tanya's life centred on helping others. Her life story is one of obstacles overcome, as she turned disadvantages into strengths. A much loved and visible member of Brighton's lesbian and gay community, Tanya was a larger-than-life character who did everything with warmth, passion and integrity. Her life tragically ended in an accident during an outdoor activity. THE TANYA BOCKING MEMORIAL FUND This fund has been created in Tanya's memory to support individuals, particularly women, who have chosen a career in outdoor education but face real barriers in advancing that career, such as discrimination or low income. The fund will make a difference by paying for training and qualification courses that will enable new outdoor leaders to learn, progress and excel in helping others. By making possible career opportunities in outdoor education, her friends and family hope that Tanya will continue to inspire generations to come. The chances made possible by this fund will be Tanya's memorial. "The Tanya Bocking Memorial Fund will help to support and encourage people to become involved in teaching outdoor activities. I firmly believe, as Tanya did, that allowing people to experience the wider world and step up to new challenges is fundamental in improving self esteem and confidence. The fund will help many more people enter the industry and continue Tanya’s great work and commitment to helping people overcome disadvantage and discrimination"

HOW THE FUND WORKS We aim to raise £5,000 each year from gifts and donations and expect to make five or six grants every year, of up to £1,000 each - the actual amount depends on the quantity and quality of applications received. The fund is administered by Adventure Unlimited. Grant decisions are made by a panel of independent Trustees, family members and friends of Tanya. Every pound raised goes directly to support new outdoor leaders in their quest to become outstanding outdoor leaders. Tanya herself was driven by love, passion, honesty and generosity; she created opportunities for herself and others to move on in life. This fund, in her memory, is a tribute to her character and a celebration of her values. HOW TO DONATE A regular gift by Standing Order is the best way to donate. We invite you to consider £3 per month. In this way, your annual contribution is spread over small monthly amounts and the fund receives a steady income to work with. One-off donations are, of course, very welcome too! If you want to make a donation please complete the donation form and return it to us. Cheques should be made payable to Adventure Unlimited. If you are a UK tax payer, don't forget to sign the Gift Aid Declaration. It means we can reclaim the tax on this and any future donations you may make. “Some of us choose to make life difficult, others have no choice. Tanya Bocking had to overcome daunting difficulties in her life, she then chose to help others to do the same. The Tanya Booking Memorial Fund is your opportunity to help others to benefit from her example. Make a gift today, and be generous!” Rebecca Stephens MBE, first British woman to climb Everest & the Seven Summits HOW TO APPLY To apply for a grant please complete the application form. The grant panel meets on the first Thursday of March, June, September and December each year. The deadline for applications is 7 days before each meeting (next deadline 29 May 2008). ETHOS In tribute to Tanya’s own strength and determination and to her commitment to creating opportunities for others, it is expected that beneficiaries of the Fund will, in turn, wish to help and support other outdoor leaders. This might be in the form of volunteering some time to train others in aspects of outdoor leadership for perhaps fundraising on the Fund’s behalf. |
